#GFS2020
How can genomics help us predict and sustain biodiversity in a changing world?
The world is experiencing unprecedented global change due to human activity and there is an urgent need to better predict its impacts on biological diversity. Many ecological forecasting initiatives have risen to this challenge, leveraging the abundance of environmental data available from resources such as Google Earth Engine . Because we know that evolution occurs on contemporary timescales, integrating an evolutionary perspective into forecasting is critical. Thankfully we're generating enormous amounts of genomic data faster than ever, through initiatives such as the Earth Biogenome Project. This symposium explores ways to leverage these data for predictions of ecological and evolutionary responses to change and the consequences of an evolutionary perspective on ecological forecasting. It brings together researchers at various stages of using genomics to better understand the responses of plants and animals to environmental change with the aim of sharing tools and approaches across systems and ultimately improving genomic forecasting of wildlife.
